About the Liverpool City Cup

The Liverpool City Cup is a Group 3 race held each year under Open Handicap conditions. Taking place at Warwick Farm Racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales, the Liverpool City Cup is run over a distance of 1300 metres and worth $125,000 in prize money.

The Liverpool City Cup is held on the same day as the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes, with this day being the biggest single day of autumn racing on the Warwick Farm calendar. The winner of this event is made exempt from ballot and penalty for the Doncaster Handicap, something that helps to attract a quality field each year.

Recent winners of the Liverpool City Cup include Danleigh in 2008, Judged in 2009, Dreamscape in 2010, Triple Elegance in 2011, and Ofcourseican in 2012. The Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes and the Schweppes Handicap at Randwick are both good lead up events, with horses also coming from the Group 2 Breeders Classic and a number of other Listed and Group races.

After racing in this event, horses may go on to the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap and Group 1 Doncaster Handicap, with some better performing horses also going on to the 1500 metre Group 1 Coolmoore Stud Classic at Rosehill Racecourse a fortnight later. Some of the notable horses to win this event over the years include Boasting in 1989-1990, All Archie in 1991-1992, and Bomber Bill in 2002.

The Liverpool City Cup has been run since 1970, originally as a Principal race over a distance of 12 furlongs. It was only run over such a long distance for its first season however, becoming a 7 furlong race in 1971 and a 1400 metre event in 1973. The Liverpool City Cup became a Group 3 race in 1979, with Lady Archon winning the first year under new status.
